What is a DDoS attack?

Your business relies heavily on its internet connectivity. Your network and applications are crucial for generating leads, processing sales, and providing customer service. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks can cripple your operations. These malicious attempts to overwhelm your infrastructure with traffic can cause outages, leading to lost revenue, frustrated customers, and reputational damage.

General Questions

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is when a bad actor or hacker launches a cyberattack to make your network or online services unavailable by overwhelming your connection with traffic from multiple sources

During a DDoS attack, you would experience extreme network congestion, slowdowns, and/or complete unavailability of your dedicated internet service. You may also notice unusual traffic usage, overwhelmed servers, and overall disruptions to normal network availability.

DDoS Protection is essential to help ensure your critical internet connectivity remains operational during an attack. This helps prevent lost revenue, lost employee productivity and reputation damage.

Frontier’s DDoS Protection is an add-on service to our Dedicated Internet Access and Managed Dedicated Internet connectivity services and includes the following features:

  • Around the clock monitoring for DDoS attacks
  • Automatic mitigations against DDoS attacks
  • Per incident Customer email notifications
  • 24×7 DDoS Protection support

DDoS scrubbing is a mitigation technique where your incoming traffic is redirected through a regional Frontier “scrubbing center” that removes the malicious (attack) traffic, allowing only clean traffic to reach your network.

It is included with purchased bandwidths of 100 Mbps – 2 Gbps.

No. DDoS Protection is not available for non-Frontier dedicated internet connections.

No. DDoS Protection is a completely over the top solution. No hardware or software is needed at your location.

Yes. The DDoS Protection service comes with two Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics. These are Time-to-Mitigate (TTM) and Time-to-Notify (TTN). Frontier is committed to notify you and mitigate DDoS attacks within 15 minutes.

Yes. The service can protect both your IPv4 and IPv6 public addresses.

100 Mbps – 100 Gbps

No! DDoS Protection is an added level of security for you. You still need a firewall because while DDoS Protection focuses on filtering out malicious traffic to prevent service disruption, a firewall provides comprehensive security by controlling access to the network, blocking unauthorized access, and protecting against various other threats such as malware, intrusions, and unauthorized data access.

  •    Volumetric – A DDoS attack that attempts to overwhelm a network with massive amounts of data to consume all available bandwidth and disrupt service. The most common DDoS attack.

  • Application and Protocol – DDoS attacks that target specific applications or server resources to disrupt service by exhausting computational resources or exploiting vulnerabilities in communication protocols such as UDP.

No. DDoS Protection is not available for Frontier Broadband customers.

No. EVPL and ELAN are private connections that do not inherently use public IP addresses. Therefore, the service cannot be added to these types of connections.

At bandwidth less than 100 Mbps, it becomes much more difficult to differentiate between legitimate and attack traffic. This results in too frequent blocking of legitimate traffic.

Yes, however there are limitations. Only the Frontier provided DIA connection(s) would be protected. Frontier can protect both Frontier assigned IP addresses and public IP addresses owned by the customer.
